Harlo ppl! I have been reading P D James now adays... She(yes yes the name belongs to a girl) is a funny writer... English writer, so alot of terms diff frm wat we understand(we learn queen's english but used it in the US way... like all things in singapore, everything here is "rojaked"), whos books are beri beri boring in the first half, gets fast paced at the end(tends to throw everything at one go) and gives u crappy endings... Sucky.... But at least better than John Grisham(and the one who wrote "godfather", i forgot his name, some italian guy...) who can come up with good story, characters and plot but gets so boring and draggy at the end.... At the beri least, all of em are better than Stephen King. Hey i hate Micheal Crinston too... Hmmmm... I hate all writers that made stories for Hollywood.....
Was reading P D James book and happen to like this para that explain the feelings i feel towards ppl who practise religion and why religion was created. It goes like(hope she dont sue me for copyrites...):
"Oh, they believe all right. It's just that what they believe has become irrelevant. I dont mean the moral teaching: the Judaeo_Christian heritage has created Western civilization and we should be grateful to it. But the Church they serve is dying. When I look at Doom(doom is a picture painted by some reowned 15th century artist in the story that depicts heaven and hell in vivid forms) I try to have some understanding of what it meant to fifteen-century men and women. If life is hard and short and full of pain, you need the hope of heaven; if there is no effective law, you need the detterent of hell. The Church gave them comfort and light(that time dont have electric lights, my dear, they burn lamps, ppl not as rich as the church, long since then) and pictures and stories(bible mah) and the hope of everlasting life. The twenty-first century has other compensations. Football for one. There you have ritual, colour, drama, the sense of belonging(this sense of belonging thing is how CH ppl and MLM companies get there ppl frm); football has its high priest, even it martyrs. And then there's shopping, art and music, travel, alcohol, drugs. We all have our own resources for staving off those two horrors of human life, boredom and the knowledge that we die. And now - God help us - there's the internet. Pornography at the touch of a few keys(i truly agree with it but i maintain that it is impt to the growing of a young adult male). If you want to find a paedophile(incidentially, P D James made alot of reference to paedophile, she even has a character in the story who is paedophilic) ring or discover how to make a bomb to blow up people you disagree with, it's all there for you. Plus, of course, a bottomless mine of other information, some of it even accurate. If all these things faill, even music, poetry, art, I shall turn to science. If my end promises to be unpleasant, I shall rely on morphine and the compassion of my doctor. Or perhaps I shall swim out to the sea and take my last look at the sky." - P D James in "Death in Holy Orders"
Quite a nice bit of thought by one of the character in the story. I the first part of the para, where it states that church provides solace to the good and detterence to the bad, is the explaination of the creation of religion, at least in my views. If not, good ppl will feel that it is pointless to be good and bad will continue on to be worse.
And there is another line, "Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction." This is stated in the story, written by some Pascal(the onli pascal i noe created "turbo pascal", a programming language). That line explains why terrorist can organise sucidal missions, kills ppl like drinking water; but when u ask us to do it, we will just think that u r mad.
I dont want to add too much of my comments or i might cloud ur better judgement. Think abt wat i said this post. Byebye
