Yo ppl, it me, now me at work, but holiday mood...
Ok so i will say damn long no blog le, one month ago. So wat to blog now?
Recently one of me friends(actually quite a number, of course not my IT friends) commented that i have a knack of doing searches online. Actually no, you need to use your brain to search.
They did an hour and a half search but couldnt turn up anything. I did it in 10 minutes. Ok maybe not 10 mins but definately less than that.
SO wats the secret of searching online? Part of it is using which search engine.
As all of you probably already know, the most popular search engine now is google and yahoo. Why google? Clean interface, fast and relevant search. Currently the best search engine that covered almost all the net. Notice no commercial abt google and after google came about, no more search engines was made. Why yahoo? I think it must be the advertisments. The YaaaaHooooooooo...oooo catch phrase. Interestingly, ppl who are totally new to the net, never use net before one, will know yahoo. But not so with msn. You see msn first because thats a brand new OS default webpage.
So marketing does help even if that thing is crap. Look at microsoft, macintosh, all are the products of marketing. They sell crap. To think i used to love macintosh products and google, due to their simple layout, is the worst of the lot(i used to love altavista). Now i know better.
Anyway, i still have friends saying that if you want to search for japan stuff, use yahoo. Actually google will suffice, just use google.co.jp, or under advance settings change the language to japan. Notice lycos oso have an advertisement campaign few years back but it still sux.
Ok so much so on their background. You can use google and see if you can search anything from the web. Of course you can. Its the best out there. I changed to google after i saw a report on google by reader's digest, saying they got so and so many servers serving so and so many countries, how they did the search by countries, so on and so forth i got convinced. Just google "Why is google better" should throw out these results.
One thing i want all of you to know is that everything is on the net. Everything, basically anything u can think of is up there. I think the only thing lacking is physical touch, you can even see their bloody faces online now. Watever you cant get physically, you can purchase it online.
So back to "How to search the net". Use google. Think of the phrase you want to search. Interestingly, i realize ppl come up with weird search phrases. Stuff like "hermoine underpants" or the likes. You guys can go to http://gssq.blogspot.com to see, that guy on and off will post the type of key phrases ppl key into search engines. 80% are sex related. 17% contain bad spellings. (Oh ya, did i tell you google got a spell check?) The rest are so weird, reading the list make my day all the time. Point to note is, google isnt bad, if your keyphrase is bad, the results will be bad. Pure and simple. Layman term: rubbish in, rubbish out.
So come another question, how to come up with a search phrase? Yeah i know, it doesnt appear out of no where and it isnt written on someone's forehead. So first thing is be as broad and possible. Say you want to search for Levi's Jeans. Just type jeans, not Levi's. Reason being you get more results this way, and you might spell Levi's wrongly. Easy? Then you realize there is no results on levi's in the first 10 search results. (Then its time to buy another brand.) In case you dont know, you can click on the page number below(or the "o"s) to go to the rest of the results.
One thing makes google special is the search engine is "intelligent", ok in a way lar, but more intelligent than the rest. It will not throw out the website that contain the most "jeans" word as the first website in your search. Some search engine do that, they rate sites according to how many keywords there are. And you guessed it, there are some cb who just paste a mass chuck of "jeans" somewhere hidden in their site and it becomes number one.
Wat abt google? They use ads. Not that you will see ads on your search results(you actually do, its at the right hand column for some results) but if you pay google a fee(i not sure how much), your website link will come out first. But you should see a header saying its an advert. Or you need to change your monitor.
So ok, now you know what google actually do. But what if you want to search for a song for a particular movie, but you dont know the song's name? Ah! Then if you are some of the friends i know, they will search the name of the movie on google, and fish around for the name of the song. Not to say its wrong, but its time consuming and you dont know what you might stumble upon. Say you might suddenly be linked to a gay site. Yeah, so much for searching gay movies.
Anyway, in this case, i will intro another website. This one called http://www.wikipedia.org. This website here is what i read when i am not mapling, watching porn or sleeping. There are so many articles inside, it brings the britannica you bought while you are in secondary school to shame. And it is updated.
How wikipedia works is anyone(yeah, anyone) can edit the pages in it any how they choose. Only that it needs to be supported by other sources, neutral in views, contain non copyrighted materials. This is the wiki concept. So for popular topics, the information are so much and detailed, Times magazine and newspapers are known to quote from it. But not as popular topics, the information might not be as good. Anyway, it is made by the general public so some of the information inside might not be true, you need to read and see for yourself.
Another thing about wikipedia is since it is edited by anyone, you see spelling errors, grammar errors(human errors), and sometimes pics of genitals(offensive pictures). I did encounter a few times, it was being hacked(not technically but they messed it up) but they will rectify before i even blink my eyes. Yeah, wonderful world of the internet.
And anything in that article if you are not sure, it is hyperlinked to related article within wikipedia. And there is external sources information. And there is pictures.
So why wiki? To me, it is a place where information regarding anything and anything regarding it is collected. So say the particular song from the movie, if you know the movie's name, just search the name, and you can see the soundtracks in that movie. Voila! If you forgot the name of the movie, search the name of the movie's distributor and see the list of movies under their name. If you forgot that too, search the actors in the movie and see list of movies under their name. If that doesnt work, i think that soundtrack is a pile of shit, i dont wanna hear it.
Force 731, guy fawkes day, bermuda triangle, spontaneous human combustion, all these are inside this website and some explained. Wikipedia wouldnt explain it, it just collects all the pieces of information regarding one topic around the net and put them under the same topic. So you dont have to re-search everything again. If you want to know background info, wiki it. You want to know more about something, wiki it. Other than searching(use google), wiki all the rest.
Ok, so how do i normally wiki? I wiki some stuff that interest me first, or some stuff i didnt understand somewhere. From there, i just read what i want.
Say, once i was interested in a cannibal show. If you recall, during my sec sch days(which is like 8 or 9 years back) there is a show alot of my friends watched(but i didnt...). They say its about cannibals eating and chopping humans and its real. And during that time, faces of death was rather popular too. Net wasnt really developed yet.
And come few months ago, one of my close friends said he just watched the film and it was real. So i want to see if i can churn out something and maybe get the dvds. So you see, i dont have any keyphrases at hand, so i cant wiki.
I google. If you have no idea of wat you are looking, dont wiki it. No, wiki dont have a page for "death flicks". And no, no cannibals either. So i find both similar keyphrases which happen to be cannibals. I google cannibals, got a few crap results, changed it to cannibal movies. Arh! I see some results.
So from the results, seive through them, see which one you like, the wiki it. I wiki one movie called "Cannibal holocaust". From wiki i saw the story writeout, the history and if the movie was real. No it was a fake, nobody died in the film, but the killing of a turtle and a monkey in the film was real. Then you see interesting trivals, the film was so real back then, someone sued the director saying he exploited some real tribes people and really killed them.
The director need to find the original actress and showed her to the judge before everything quiet down. Sorry, he also needs to show how it was videocliped.
Interesting, no? So ppl cant go around saying it was real anymore. And from this website, i saw there is really this genre of movies that plays around with death and being a kapo singaporean, i clicked on the link.
Godz... You should see the number of flicks with these stuff. Two that caught my eye was "guinea pig series" and "man behind the sun" or "black sun 731".
Ok the guinea pig series stirred a great controversy then. It was filmed in a "handycam" mode, think blair witch project, and showed just 4 guys torturing one girl to death. Note that this film was filmed way back, i forgot the year but the internet movie database has a date on it. So the blair witch copied it but didnt have the style. Made us wanna vomit instead(motion sickness).
So this flick there is this part where the guys stuck a pin like thingy into the girl's eye. Its disgusting, even now, and back then, it was the first of its kind. And this movie is short, like 20 odd minutes, with no credits, making it look damn real. Yeah, its a fake. But one thing i get to know from wiki is charlie sheen did watch the flick, and alerted the police about it. It was so real FBI led an investigation in it and realized it was a fake. This clip was done undergroud. The girl was found alive. Hahahahaha. Anyway, parts include pulling off fingernails and all those stuff that made you cringe. And there is like 6 or 7 in this series. Cool!
Ok, then comes "man behind the sun". Wiki it and see the results. After looking at the synopsis, i realize i did watched this show way way way back, when i was like below 10. It gave me nightmares then and that was the first time I felt sick in the stomach with a weird bitter taste in your mouth, you know, the feeling u felt when u get disgusted.
Ok this show is about force 731(which is real, mind you). In case you dont know, force 731 is japan biological military research dept. It does research on contagious stuff and how to make and spread contagious dieases. And if you dont know, it happened during world war 2 and till now, one of the most disgusting human experiment facility ever known.
Ok, basically they do research on chinese found around the area. They perform vivisection(disection on live subjects, not operation hor, cause operation u sitich them back, this one is you dump them after that)on humans with no anesthetic, thinking it will distort the results found. So they do one before any sort of test, then put another subject into one biological agent, and do another vivi after that.
They did some weird experiments, wiki got the whole list, go there read, and singapore happens to have one branch of it too. So in actual fact, this is much worse than the jews holocaust.
So back to this movie. This movie did all the stuff 731 did but 2 of them are real.
One is the bunch of rats killing one white cat and after the cat died(hey it was one cat against zillons of rats) everything is burned.
The other one, which is real disgusting, is the vivisection of a small boy. Yes, that was real.
So much for wiki, it did helped me pass time for countless of times.
I will end this here, see if got ppl read and if so, wat else they want me to continue or clarify.
One point to note is i write all these frm my memory, if they are different from your google or wiki search results, blame my memory, me getting old.
Another point, me not paid by them, but i do really love to use them.
Next blog i will show how to search in different language and how to translate them to english for the normal readers, but u will have to bugger me.
So long.
